#8 of 13 ways of being that patients find attractive is being trustworthy.
One of the ways to create trust is by keeping promises. As in "My word is my bond." What kinds of promises, explicit and implicit, do you make?
Do you accept new patients with the promise you'll be treating their symptoms?
Far more common is the un-promise. As in, "Let's give it try and see how it goes."
Granted, the risk of breaking your word is lessened, but it lacks confidence.
Instead, how about this: "You have a problem that's likely to require some type of ongoing care for the rest of your life, just like brushing and flossing your teeth. For starters let's take this aggressively, seeing you three times a week. After four weeks we'll retest you, comparing where you were, with where you are, and then together we'll chart a course for the future."
