Attributed to others, it was Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part II who observed, “There are many things my father taught me here in this room. He taught me: keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.”

Who are your enemies?

They’re not the usual suspects:

Insurance carriers
Medical practitioners
Other chiropractors
The weather or economy
Medically oriented community
Lack of new patients

Your true enemies are far more formidable:

Patient beliefs – why consistent patient education matters so much.
Entitlement – believing certain aspects of running a practice are beneath you.
Fear of success – resisting the added responsibility and exposure that growth brings.
Business acumen – resenting the obligations of running a small business.
Poor discipline – lacking a clear purpose that captures your imagination and passion.
Unclear boundaries – vagueness about where your responsibility ends and the patient’s begins.
State management – failing to show up grounded, objective, and inspiring.

Subtle, but more daunting.
