Apparently, the thinking goes like this, “If I downplay the seriousness of their problem and befriend the patient, they’re more likely to accept my recommendations.”

There are many things wrong with this belief. But here are a few:

By minimizing their problem, you’ve compromised your professional standing.

Patients aren’t looking for a friend (even if you are).

You only get a handful of visits for the patient to sense progress before they give up on you and chiropractic. Which has little to do with your fantasy that patients will extend you grace by befriending them.

This is a high school strategy—not that of a trusted licensed professional.

It’s a sign that you’ve switched from serving, to being served. From solving their problem, to solving yours. Of seeing patients as a resource rather than an opportunity.

You may need the income but be careful you don’t confuse cause with effect.
