#5 of 13 ways of being that patients find attractive is being available.
The twin brother of being available is being approachable. It's one of the hallmarks of practitioners who acquire reputations of being gifted healers.
This requires showing up vulnerable, lowering your guard and being real. When you do, you send a signal to patients that it's safe for them to lower their guard and true healing can manifest.
How can you show up vulnerable and open?
Self-deprecating humor is a good start. Avoid the temptation of taking yourself too seriously. Copying the emotional distancing used by medical doctors sets up a barrier that most patients won't even attempt to scale. The result is a transactional relationship that rarely becomes transformational.
Revealing a flaw, an unhealthy obsession or some other shortcoming is another helpful tactic that puts patients at ease and sets the stage for deeper, more meaningful conversations.
