Safety Pin Implementation

As chiropractic emerged as a new healing discipline, explaining how it worked became essential. Early chiropractors relied on simple metaphors to communicate the big idea.

One of the most enduring is the chiropractic “safety pin cycle,” adapted from B.J. Palmer’s brain–body communication model.

Simple. Visual. Timeless.

The Clasp – Represents the brain.

The Spring – The coil represents tissue cells.

The Efferent Side – The side that opens represents nerve impulses leaving the brain.

The Afferent Side – The other side represents nerve impulses returning to the brain.

The Basic Script

WITH THE PIN CLASPED TOGETHER, HOLD IT VERTICALLY WITH THE CLASP AT THE TOP.

“Up here is your brain. It controls and coordinates everything in your body — from your nose to your toes.”

TRACE YOUR FINGER DOWN ONE SIDE OF THE PIN.

“Messages travel down your spinal cord and out to every organ and tissue — for example, your stomach.”

TRACE YOUR FINGER UP THE OPPOSITE SIDE.

“And information travels back up to the brain, letting it know how things are working.

“When communication flows clearly in both directions, your body can adapt, heal, and function as designed.”

UNCLASP THE PIN.

“But life applies stress — physical, chemical, and emotional. This can interfere with these nerve signals.”
“The moving bones of the spine are common culprits. We call this a vertebral subluxation.”

“When nerve communication is disturbed, organs and tissues don’t work as well and symptoms can appear.”

“Lacking proper nervous system regulation, affected organs and tissues don’t work right and ill-health can result.

POINTING TO THE SPRING.

“For example, if stomach signals are affected, you may experience digestive problems.

“That may not be a stomach problem but a brain-to-stomach communication problem.”

RECLASP THE PIN.

“My job is to locate and reduce these nervous system disturbances with precise chiropractic adjustments.

“When nerve communication is restored, the body can regain normal function, naturally, without drugs or surgery.”

“It’s as simple as that.”

The Drug Solution

WITH THE PIN UNCLASPED IN THE “SUBLUXATION” CONFIGURATION ABOVE.

“Now the medical approach of symptom-treating might be to prescribe a medication for your stomach.

“And while such a strategy is very profitable for the drug company, how successful do you suppose that might be with compromised brain-to-body communications?”

Waiting For Obvious Symptoms

WITH THE PIN UNCLASPED IN THE “SUBLUXATION” CONFIGURATION ABOVE.

“Instead of your stomach, imagine the nerve communication problem is with your liver, kidneys, spleen, or some other organ or tissue that doesn’t have pain-sensing nerves?

“That’s why we often say, ‘Thank goodness for back pain.’ It brings people in before silent problems become serious ones.”

Keeping Your Visits

WITH THE PIN UNCLASPED, SLOWLY CLOSING IT.

“This problem didn’t happen overnight. Reducing nerve interference occurs little by little, each visit building on the ones before.

“Unfortunately, many start feeling better and discontinue their care before we can retrain and strengthen supporting muscles and soft tissues.

LET THE SPRING RESUME THE OPEN POSITION.

“And their problem returns. No problem. Come back in and we’ll restart the healing process.”
