Implementing the Faster Relief Insert

faster-relief-implementation.jpgMedicine has taught patients to rely on the drug, surgery, or intervention to produce the outcome they seek. Granted, that can deliver a hit of dopamine when your adjustments heroically reduce nervous system interference and patients get relief.

Except when your adjustments don’t seem to produce the wanted relief. Or don’t do so quickly enough!

Here’s a communication tool to help you demonstrate patient leadership, enroll them as active partners in their care, and make your adjustments work even better.

Idea #1

Most practices review this handout at the report of findings—usually as part of the care recommendations for the initial stage of relief care.

“At its best, chiropractic care is a partnership. There will things I’ll be doing on each visit. And there are things you can do between visits to support your care.

“This handout lists 16 action steps you can take to improve the speed of your recovery and get better results from your care.

“Naturally, the first suggestion is to keep your visits. Repeated visits help create the momentum necessary to make spinal changes and reduce nervous system interference. Missing a visit can jeopardize your results.

“I’m sending you home with this copy and I hope you’ll read it over. You’re probably doing some of these action steps already. The more you’re willing to take on and support your care between visits, the better your adjustments will work and the faster you’ll experience the relief you want.”

Follow up on a future visit to get their commitment. Record in your notes and follow up.

Idea #2

You may want to devote the patient’s third visit to reviewing things a patient can do to enhance the healing response.

Invest a few minutes in the adjusting room reviewing the importance of keeping their visit schedule, along with the other points on this handout.

“Often we discover that many of our patients think the recovery they’re seeking occurs when they’re lying on our adjustment table.”

“But the truth is, the lasting healing that our patients want occurs by what they’re willing to do between visits to support their care.

“Here are 16 things you can do to get faster relief and better results. There are few in particular that I think warrant a deeper explanation.”

Review the entire list or single out some of the more important. Try to deep dive into a few of the suggestions most relevant to the patient’s overall health.

Find out how consistently the patient is attending to these suggestions at their progress examination.

Idea #3

You may want to hold these suggestions in reserve to review at the patient’s progress examination and report.

Use any of the relevant scripting ideas above.

Idea #4

Whether you review this handout at the beginning of their care or not, revisit them should patients express frustration with the speed of their recovery.

“I agree. By now I thought you’d be further along as well. What do you suppose is going on?

“Tell me about which of these 16 suggestions you’re actively pursuing? I know you’re keeping your visits, so that’s good. But what other things are you doing between visits to support your recovery?”

Patients want to delegate their headache or back pain to you! But health isn’t something that can be delegated to you or any other practitioner. At its best chiropractic is a partnership.
