Patient as a Coach
When chiropractors coach chiropractors, there’s the risk of perpetuating outdated strategies.Manipulative scripting. Heavy-handed patient management tactics. Salesmanship. And all manner of procedures that reveal a mistrust of patients, objectifying them in the process.
Justified as being in the patient’s best interests, short-term compliance and a temporary increase in the numbers is exchanged for fewer referrals.
It’s a poor trade.
And if the expensive advice is antithetical to your instincts, you’re told to give up your poverty consciousness and do it anyway—if you want success.
Nonsense.
However, you probably lost “beginner’s mind” sometime during the first semester at chiropractic college. From then on, you've seen things from a chiropractor’s point of view:
• Assuming patients value the same things you value
• Held hostage by irrational patient behaviors
• Blaming yourself when a patient discontinues care
• Treating symptoms instead of reducing nerve interference
• Trusting what patients say, rather than what they do
Granted, as a patient I can’t tell you how to spot heterotropic ossification. Or share my experiences with EMR software. But I can give you insights into how today's patients think and behave. I can share patient-honoring communication strategies. And coax you to embrace eternal success principles.
Thankfully, what holds back most practices has little to do with the clinical aspects of chiropractic.
In the last 40 years I’ve had 10 different chiropractors for my weekly adjustments, paying cash for the privilege. Plus, I’ve conducted over 50 in-office consultations and patient focus groups and led over 300 private consulting calls. My unique patient’s-point-of-view has captivated the attention of tens of thousands of chiropractors around the world.
As a patient, I’m uniquely positioned to offer sensible, pragmatic, patient-centered coaching. But of course these days anyone can call themselves a coach.
I see it as a way to give back to the profession, pay it forward and maybe leave a legacy in the process.
That’s why I made HeadSpace Coaching so affordable.
I have a heart for chiropractors for whom practice seems to be an uphill battle.
Thankfully, I’ve been blessed with an insatiable curiosity. My willingness to ask “dumb” questions has produced rare insights and fresh ways of seeing things for countless chiropractors.
Perhaps it will do the same for you.
