Monday Morning Motivation | The Folly of Goal Setting

Monday Morning Motivation Masthead

Many this week will be setting goals for the New Year. If that’s you, consider this.

Besides aiming for some numerical goal, whether weekly visits, new patients, collections, or something else, keep in mind that such numbers are merely symptoms. A convenient, yet unhelpful way of keeping score.

Will setting goals that are 10% more ambitious give you more discipline?

Will they give you greater focus, generosity, empathy, and compassion?

Will they enhance your patient communications?

Unlikely.

Worse, should you happen to achieve your goals, you’ll likely feel compelled to repeat the process.

Until you can’t.

Then what?

Goal setting can be a convenient substitute for having a high and noble purpose.

When taking our last breath, we won’t be thinking about our biggest day or most profitable month. But rather the relationships we’ve made, the lives we’ve touched, and the legacy we’re leaving behind.

Perhaps make those your goal?
